UNO Student Wins Scholarship To Study In France

April 26, 2011

University of New Orleans student Margaret Sullivan is this year’s winner of the prestigious James Domengeaux Scholarship. Sullivan, a double major in French and international studies, is the first UNO recipient of the scholarship since it was first given in 1998.

The scholarship—named in honor of James Domengeaux, who created the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana (CODOFIL) in 1968—is offered by La Fondation Louisiane. It will allow Sullivan to study at the Catholic University of Paris during the 2011-12 academic year. The award includes round-trip airfare, tuition and a $10,000 stipend for lodging, books and meals.

The James Domengeaux Scholarship is given annually to one outstanding Louisiana university student whose level of French will allow for instruction in a complete French environment. The recipient must also demonstrate a commitment to assist in the promotion of French in Louisiana.

Sullivan, a native of Lafayette, plans to graduate from UNO in 2013. She was also the recipient of the James Whitlow Outstanding Achievement Award in French presented to her earlier this month by the UNO Department of Foreign Languages. She will be officially presented with the Domengeaux scholarship at the annual La Fondation Louisiane luncheon in Lafayette on May 28.
