Theatre UNO's 'The Glass Menagerie' Part of Tennessee Williams Festival

March 24, 2011

Theatre UNO, in conjunction with the Tennessee Williams/ New Orleans Literary Festival, will present a production of The Glass Menagerie at Le Petit Théâtre beginning on Friday, March 25. It will be directed by David Hoover, chair of the University of New Orleans Department of Film, Theatre and Communication Arts, and Janet Shea will play the role of Amanda Wingfield.

This year’s festival marks the 100th birthday of Tennessee Williams, and The Glass Menagerie is the playwright’s most poignant family drama. The semiautobiographical account, set in a 1930s St. Louis tenement house, is the story of a family desperate to break free from burdens of the past. The drama unfolds through the memories of Tom Wingfield, a man torn between literary aspirations and familial responsibility. Tom mother’s, Amanda, is an aging Southern belle who is determined to marry off Tom’s agonizingly shy and handicapped sister, Laura.

Performances will take place at the historic Le Petit Théâtre in the French Quarter and will run March 25 at 7:30 p.m., March 26 at 3:00 p.m., March 31-April 2 at 7:30 p.m. and April 3 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 for UNO students, faculty and staff, and senior citizens and $12 for general admission.
