UNO To Celebrate Physics During Einstein Week

March 24, 2011

The University of New Orleans will hold Einstein Week, its annual celebration of physics with events beginning on Friday, March 25 and concluding on Friday, April 1.

On Friday, March 25, there will be an open house at the UNO observatory, located on the third floor of the Science Building, from 7:30-9:30 p.m. A second open house will take place during the same hours on Friday, April 1. UNO’s computer-controlled telescope enables observers to view nebulae, double stars, planets and other heavenly bodies. UNO astrophysicist C. Gregory Seab and Michael Sandras, former planetarium curator for Kenner’s Daily Living Science Center, will be on hand to provide information and explanations. The event is open to the public; it will be canceled in the event of cloudy weather.

“Physics in the Quadrangle” will take place in front of the Earl K. Long Library on Wednesday, March 30 from noon-3:00 p.m. Activities include demonstrations, a hurricane machine, solar viewing telescopes and a high altitude balloon.

The Einstein Lecture will be presented by Loyola University professor Martin McHugh on Wednesday, March 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the UNO Chemistry-Sciences Annex, room 103. His lecture is entitled “The Physicist Robert H. Dicke and the Cosmic Background Radiation.” McHugh will discuss the work of Robert Dicke, one of the most influential physicists of the late 20th century.
