UNO Professors' Research Featured in National Geographic Program

March 03, 2011

The research of a pair of UNO professors will be featured in the National Geographic Channel documentary “Earth: Making Of A Planet," which will air locally on Sunday, March 6 at 7:00 p.m. The program will also make its broadcast debut on Discovery Channel Canada.

A portion of the documentary will focus on the hypothesis of husband and wife research team Royhan Gani, professor of earth and environmental sciences, and Nahid Gani, research professor in earth and environmental sciences. The Ganis say their research shows that tectonics—the movement of the earth’s crust—were ultimately responsible for the evolution of humankind. Their hypothesis, known as “the wall of Africa,” was published in the journal Geotimes in January 2008.

This is how the National Geographic Channel describes the two-hour documentary: The history of our planet is epic from its birth out of cosmic rubble to the unique complex of land, sea, atmosphere and life we know now. See how water was transported to Earth’s surface inside millions of meteors. Through CGI re-creations, meet the inhabitants of Earth over the ages, from slimy mats of algae to the great dinosaurs and the ancestors of mammals and humans.
