Peter J. Fos, the sixth leader and the first president in the history of the University of New Orleans, will begin his new position on Tuesday, January 17. Last month, the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors selected Fos at a special meeting in Baton Rouge.
Fos is a UNO alumnus who previously served as a professor and program director at the LSU Health Sciences Center, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of Texas at Tyler and dean of the college of health at the University of Southern Mississippi. He received his undergraduate degree in biological sciences from UNO, a doctor of dental surgery at the LSU Health Sciences Center and a master of public health and a doctor of philosophy in health care decision analysis at Tulane University.
Last month, UNO also officially moved from the LSU System to the University of Louisiana System. In the UL System, the chief executive of a university is the president.
