Freshman Pens Commentary In Education Week Magazine

November 11, 2011

A commentary, entitled “New Orleans Is No Education Miracle,” from University of New Orleans freshman Linda Tran appears in the November 2 edition of Education Week magazine.  In it, Tran writes that, “Even though math and reading scores have improved in New Orleans, the challenge that traps so many people my age is the lack of a high school diploma or at least one that truly represents the education necessary to succeed in life.”

Tran was the 2011 salutatorian of Abramson Science and Technology Charter School in New Orleans. She is a youth lead organizer and researcher for the Vietnamese American Young Leaders Association (VAYLA) survey. In her commentary, Tran writes that the VAYLA survey of six Orleans Parish public schools “shows that the historic inequalities faced by students of color and those from low-income communities were not washed away by the floodwaters.”

Education Week was founded by the nonprofit publisher Editorial Projects in Education in 1981 to provide national, independent and first-rate journalistic coverage of precollegiate education. It has earned a reputation as the “must-read” news source for K-12 leaders and policy experts.
