University of New Orleans students taking Patricia Austin’s children’s literature class are required to write and illustrate their own children’s book before the end of the semester. On Wednesday, the students got a chance to learn from two people who make their living doing just that. Acclaimed children’s author Candace Fleming and author/illustrator Eric Rohmann visited the children’s literature class to share their own experiences in creating award-winning books. During their visit to New Orleans, Fleming and Rohmann also visited a number of prekindergarten classes and conducted a full day of professional development for teachers.

Fleming is the author of more than 20 books for children. She won a Boston Globe Horn Book Award for Best Nonfiction for The Lincolns. The Horn Book Awards are among the most prestigious honors in the field of children’s and young adult literature.

Rohmann won the 2003 Caldecott Medal for My Friend Rabbit and the 1995 Caldecott Honor Award for Time Flies. The Caldecott Medal is given to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.
