Computer Science Department Gets More Than $600k In Navy Contracts

October 31, 2011

The University of New Orleans Department of Computer Science has been awarded contracts from the Navy worth nearly $685,000 to study new computer technologies that will significantly reduce the cost of staffing and maintaining networks. The work will be conducted in association with local business partner Geocent. The contracts are from the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Atlantic, which has a regional office in UNO’s Research & Technology Park.

UNO researchers will study cloud computing and service-oriented architecture. Cloud computing provides software services over the Internet by harnessing the vast power of computer servers at centralized data centers.  Users can access their data and use software services from anywhere in a secure cloud-computing environment.  This can yield significant savings because users no longer need to purchase hardware and software.  Cloud computing is made possible by the technology based on service-oriented architecture.  The purpose of the study on service-oriented architecture is to derive a sustainable business cost model for the center’s future businesses.

Scott Whittenburg, UNO vice chancellor for research, is the project director. Computer science professors Mahdi Abdelguerfi, Shengru Tu, Golden Richard III and Vassil Roussev are investigators on the project.
