Capital One has announced on November 19 $405,000 in education-related grants to the New Beginnings Schools Foundation and the Capital One-University of New Orleans Charter School Network. A strong supporter of UNO and its charter school network, Capital One has contributed a total of $1.7 million since 2006.

The planning team composed of students from UNO, LSU and DePaul won first place and $25,000 for its nonprofit partner in the JP Morgan Chase Communtiy Development competition.

The UNO/LSU/DePaul team won first prize and $25,000 for its nonprofit partner in the JP Morgan Chase Community Development Competition for the entry "5523 St. Claude Avenue: Bringing Fresh Food to the Lower Ninth Ward," a proposal for a grocery store in the Lower Ninth Ward.

In its first competition, the University of New Orleans Phi Alpha Law Delta Fraternity Mock Trial Team defeated Citadel Military College and was the only team among 40 to receive the Ethics and Professionalism Award at the Hurricane Invitational held over the Halloween weekend in Miami, Florida.

Dr. Stocker died July 8 at the age of 85.

The University of New Orleans community today celebrated the reopening of the Lakefront Arena Aquatic Center, an event which marked the return home for the UNO Swimming and Diving Team. The Aquatic Center had not been opened to the public since it was damaged in Hurricane Katrina in August 2005.

Just five years after she "retooled" her life, University of New Orleans alumna Barb Johnson is well on her way to publishing her second book. Johnson, a 2008 graduate of the Creative Writing Workshop, UNO's MFA in creative writing program, has won the fifth Gift of Freedom Award from A Room of Her Own Foundation, a two-year, $50,000 grant to provide support while she pens her next project, a novel.

The National Center for Advanced Manufacturing (NCAM) in support of NASA's Constellation Program reached a milestone on April 16 when the first weld on an Orion crew module ground test article was completed on the University of New Orleans' new Universal Welding System #2 (UWS2). The weld was conducted by Lockheed Martin Engineers at NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF) in eastern New Orleans.

Communities that prepare to respond to natural and man-made catastrophes are more resilient to the disaster's short- and long-term effects than similar communities that have not improved their readiness, said John Kiefer, University of New Orleans professor of political science. 'Flood Marker,' the sculpture by UNO Associate Professor of Fine Arts Christopher Saucedo, has been installed on Franklin Avenue at Mithra Street, near the UNO Lakefront Campus, to memorialize the New Orleans flood of 2005 and its victims.

University of New Orleans sculptor Christopher Saucedo recently installed Flood Marker at the Gentilly intersection of Franklin Avenue and Mithra Street near the UNO campus. Flood Marker, an 8,000-pound freestanding and monumental granite block of water, memorializes the catastrophic 2005 flood that followed Hurricane Katrina.
