UNO Ranked Among Nation's Best By Washington Monthly
9/17/2009

(September 17, 2009, New Orleans, La.) - The University of New Orleans is one of just four Louisiana public schools to be included among the nation's best in the Washington Monthly's 2009 National College Rankings.

UNO, Louisiana State University, Louisiana Tech and the University of Louisiana-Lafayette are the only public schools in the state listed in the publication's 2009 Best Colleges list.

"It's great to be recognized in a ranking such as this that really measures the actual impact of the University on its alumni and community at large," said Chancellor Timothy P. Ryan. "This is a positive recognition for UNO."

To compile the list, Washington Monthly editors "gathered reams of publicly available data and settled on three criteria: social mobility, research and service.

"In our eyes, America's best colleges are those that work hardest to help economically disadvantaged students earn the credentials that the job market demands," said the editors.

"They're the institutions that contribute new scientific discoveries and highly trained PhDs. They're the colleges that emphasize the obligations students have to serve their communities and the nation at large."

The University of New Orleans (UNO), the urban research University of the State of Louisiana, provides essential support for the educational, economic, cultural and social well-being of the culturally rich and diverse New Orleans metropolitan area. It opened its doors in 1958 as part of the Louisiana State University System "to bring public-supported higher education to Louisiana's largest urban community." Today, UNO offers 43 undergraduate degree programs, 37 masters, and 11 doctoral programs. The 340-acre main campus sits on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain, offering easy access to all parts of the metro area. For more information, visit http://www.uno.edu/.
