Saxophonist Samir Zarif to Conduct Free 'Informance' at UNO on Sept. 24

(September 10, 2009, New Orleans, La.) - Saxophonist Samir Zarif, a UNO Jazz Studies alumnus and leader of the band The Story, will conduct a free "informance" on Thursday, September 24 at 4:30 p.m. in Room 103 of the University of New Orleans Performing Arts Center as part of the UNO Department of Music's ongoing Meet the Artist series.

The event will feature a performance by Zarif as well as a discussion of the music industry, including the ups and downs of running a self-produced, self-managed touring ensemble. The public is welcome to attend.

The event also represents the first is a series of concerts and clinics to be videotaped for the newly formed New Orleans Music, Entertainment and Education Consortium. The consortium, formed to create resources to support the New Orleans music and arts education communities and to enhance the region's cultural economy, is funded through a 2008 Louisiana Board of Regents and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development grant. Members include the music and music business programs at the University of New Orleans, Loyola University, Dillard University and Delgado Community College.

The UNO Meet the Artist series is supported by the UNO Jazz Studies program and directed by Steve Masakowski, Coca-Cola Endowed Chair of Jazz Studies.
