UNO English Professor Boyd to Speak on 19th Century Women Writers on September 17
9/9/2009
(September 9, 2009, New Orleans, La.) - Anne E. Boyd, University of New Orleans Associate Professor of English, will discuss her new book, Wielding the Pen, as the UNO Coffee Talk Lecture Series continues on Thursday, September 17 at 12:30 p.m. in the Douglas "Dougie" Hitt Room (407) of the Earl K. Long Library.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is presented by the UNO Women's Center and the Women's and Gender Studies Program.

Boyd's book presents a wide spectrum of 19th century American women's writings on the themes of authorship and creativity. The works, some of which are reprinted for the first time, challenge prevailing notions of the time about women and authorship, such as the idea that "no happy woman writes." The anthology of primary materials reflects the fears, desires and motivations of female authors and the opportunities and obstacles they encountered as professional writers.
