(August 19, 2009, New Orleans, La.) - Debasish Mohanty, a University of New Orleans chemistry doctoral student, placed first in a poster competition at the 215th Electrochemical Society meeting held recently in San Francisco.
His poster, titled "Decomposition of LixCoO2 Characterized by Magnetic Measurements," was one of two awarded first place in the Solid-State Science and Technology Division in which 71 posters were submitted. Winners were selected by a panel of 14 scientist judges.
Mohanty is conducting his graduate research in the UNO Advanced Materials Research Institute (UNO AMRI) under the direction of Dr. Heike B. Gabrisch, assistant professor of chemistry. The research focuses on controlling the reactions that take place while charging batteries to determine how the battery life can be extended, Mohanty explained.
Mohanty earned a master's degree at Berhampur University in his native India before coming to UNO in August 2007.
