Auditions for New Orleans Jazz Institute at UNO Free Saturday Music School are August 22
8/10/2009
(August 7, 2009, New Orleans, La.) - The New Orleans Jazz Institute at UNO (NOJI) will hold citywide auditions for its free Saturday Music School on Saturday, August 22 from 9 a.m. to noon in the UNO Performing Arts Center Recital Hall on the Lakefront Campus. The auditions are open to students aged 8 to 14 with previous musical experience, said Robin Williams, program director of NOJO at UNO.
Students must bring their instrument to the auditions and be prepared to:
- Play three major scales and three minor scales of their choosing;
- Play two to three minutes of a musical selection of their choosing;
- Sight-read a piece to be provided at the auditions.
Twenty young musicians will be selected from among those who audition to participate in the Saturday Music School to be held at the UNO Performing Arts Center on the Lakefront Campus. The program, scheduled to begin in mid-September, will offer training in strings, music theory, sight signing, music appreciation, woodwinds, horns, piano and percussion, along with multidisciplinary arts activities such as mural painting and dance.
Auditions on August 22 will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis. Parents should sign in upon arriving at the Performing Arts Center that morning.
In addition to musical proficiency, "it's an individual's commitment to music and desire to learn that will best qualify him or her for our program," said musician Irvin Mayfield, artistic director of NOJI at UNO.
The Saturday Music School, a collaboration of NOJI at UNO, operated through the UNO College of Liberal Arts Music Department, and the Capital One-UNO Charter School Network, is unparalleled in scope and design. In addition to serving the students with previous music experience, group music instruction will be provided to 20 beginning music students from Gentilly Terrace Elementary School (operated by a partnership between the Capital One-UNO Charter Network and the Recovery School District).
"The Saturday Music School is a perfect complement to our educational approach of providing students with the resources to become well-rounded individuals," said Andre Perry, associate dean of the UNO College of Education and Human Development and chief executive officer of the Capital One-UNO Charter School Network. "This is one of many learning experiences we provide that will prepare them for college."
Free to all participants, the Saturday Music School is designed to adhere to the National Standards for Arts Education as set forth by the National Association for Music Education. It will be staffed by faculty and music educaiton instructors from UNO, NOJI at UNO, the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra and other contracted artistic personnel.
