UNO Reports Significant Increase in Fall Semester Applications
7/2/2009
(July 2, 2009, New Orleans, La.) - The University of New Orleans reports an increase in the number of students applying for admission for the fall semester for the second consecutive year, indicating the University's enrollment will continue its steady rise, said Andy Benoit, director of admissions.
The number of applications in all categories - freshmen, transfer students, re-entering students and graduate students - has increased, Benoit said.
Among those planning to enter UNO's fall freshman class are ten 2009 high school valedictorians from the Greater New Orleans area, Benoit said.
"We are particularly excited that we are drawing the interest of so many top caliber students," Benoit said. "This is our largest group of valedictorians in recent history."
Freshmen applications have increased to 3,648 or 8 percent more than the 3,368 received at this point last year, he said. Last year, UNO increased the size of its freshman class by 23 percent from the previous year representing the highest increase in the LSU System, Benoit said.
The number of freshmen admitted compared to last year is also encouraging, Benoit said. Freshmen admissions for fall are up 7 percent at 2,003, compared to 1,869 admitted by this date in 2008.
The number of students who have applied to transfer to UNO has also increased, from 1,784 in 2008 to 1,826 this year, and the number of graduate student applications has increased to 1,913 from 1,831 last year, he said.
"This proves that the efforts UNO is putting forth are paying off," Benoit said. "As we are able to tell our story to more and more potential students, more and more are seeing what a great place UNO is to get an education."
