11/5/2009
The UNO Press has published eight new titles this fall. The publications include poetry, photographs, essays, Austrian politics and a guide to understanding the music business.
Theoretical Killings: Essays & Accidents, by Steven Church. Publisher's Weekly calls Church, acclaimed author of The Guinness Book of Me, "a rigorously observant and emotionally perceptive writer likely to stay on readers' radar." Here he stretches his wings into philosophy, and the world will never be the same. This mixed-genre collage of accidents and explorations is a journey into the depths of the human mind. Church examines moral intuition through an imaginary serial killer and soap carver named Smith, has discussions of beauty disguised in blood-filled bathtubs and a butcher shop, and proffers letters of admiration to Abe Lincoln and the Bionic Man. Rowing to Sweden: Essays on Faith, Love, Politics and Movies, by Fredrick Barton. Fredrick Barton's first collection of nonfiction contends with an impressive range of cultural and political issues. The award-winning essays display a keen and perceptive critical eye trained always on the zeitgeist, whether it is the 1960s, the political climate of the new millennium or anywhere in between. Dinty W. Moore says: "In Rowing to Sweden, Barton continues the best of the essay tradition: wisdom, grace, a stubborn curiosity, and the urge to follow an idea wherever it leads. An intelligent book that will open both heart and mind." October 2009. ($18.95; ISBN: 978-0-9706190-5-1)
Dogs in My Life: The New Orleans Photographs of John T. Mendes. Raised in New Orleans, John Tibule Mendes lived most of his life in a two-room house on Broad Street with his beloved mother and their dogs. Only after his death in 1965 was it discovered that this lonely and socially awkward man had spent most of his free time documenting beautiful and unusual scenes of early 20th century New Orleans. His glassplate negatives, discovered after his death and published for the first time, captured subjects typically ignored by the photographers of the era: transvestites, demolition of historic buildings, working class children playing in their yards, the mean streets of New Orleans. The collection is complemented by excerpts from his self-published autobiography , Dogs in My Life. ($26.95.
