Renowned Acoustician Thomas Rossing to Speak at UNO on November 2 and 4

Internationally known musical acoustician Thomas D. Rossing, Visiting Professor at Stanford University's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics, will present Blow, Bow and Beat: The Science of Musical Instruments on Monday, November 2 at 9:30 a.m. in the University of New Orleans Performing Arts Center Recital Hall.

The talk will appeal to anyone with an interest in music, said Juliette W. Ioup, UNO professor of physics.

Rossing, who is visiting UNO to conduct research with members of the Department of Physics, will present a more technical talk titled The Physics of Musical Instruments at the Department of Physics seminar on Wednesday, November 4 at 3 p.m. in the Science Center, room 1053. Coffee will be served at 2:50 p.m.

Both talks are free and open to the public.

Rossing has written several books on acoustics and music and published numerous research papers on various aspects of musical acoustics. One of his books, The Science of Sound, is used as the textbook in two Physics of Music courses at UNO. Rossing's many honors include the Gold Medal of hte Acoustical Society of America, the organization's highest award. Rossing, who holds a doctorate from Iowa State University, is Professor Emeritus of Physics at Northern Illinois University where he established the acoustics research program.
