Privateers Giavotella, Bowser Named to All-Tournament Team
6/6/2007
University of New Orleans outfielder Brandon Bowser and second baseman Johnny Giavotella have been named to the NCAA Wichita Regional All-Tournament team.
Giovatella led the tournament with a .636 batting average, going seven for 11 with five RBIs and two runs scored. Bowser, meanwhile, overcame a zero-for-four start with five hits in his final ten at-bats. The senior capped off the Privateers' 7-6 upset of Wichita State on June 1, with a two-run single in the top of the ninth.
The Privateers' Cinderella season came to an end on June 3, as Wichita State tallied 14 hits to take a 7-3 win in the Wichita Regional. Derek Schermerhorn led the Shockers (51-20) with three hits, including a two-run homer, while Matt Brown added two hits and two RBIs. Aaron Shafer (8-2) got the win after tossing six innings and giving up two runs and five hits.
The top-seeded Shockers advanced to the championship where they defeated Arizona twice to advance to the Super Regional Tournament. Schermerhorn was named the Regional MVP after leading the Shockers to the Regional title.
In the final game, UNO's Nick Schwaner hit a solo home run in the fifth, giving the Privateers a school-tying 90 home runs on the year. But UNO could manage just nine hits agains Shafer and the Shocker bullpen.
"Their pitching was the story," said UNO head coach Tom Walter. "We knew we would have to pitch really well going against a guy like Shafer. We were a little too aggressive the last two games, and they did a good job taking advantage of it."
The Privateers used five pitchers on the afternoon, starting senior Matt McKissick. The left-hander gave up a solo run in the first and one more in the third before Walter handing the ball to sophomore David Burch.
Burch also gave UNO a chance, giving up two runs in nearly three innings. Southpaw Matt Wagner got the Privateers out of a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the fifth and gave up a run in 1 1/3 innings. The Privateer bats, though, could never to Shafer. The right-hander, making his second start since missing three weeks with a sore elbow, struck out six. He got key strikeouts in both the fourth and fifth innings, stranding UNO runners on third in both situations.
The Privateers ended the season tying the 2000 team for the most wins since 1996. It was also the first time UNO reached NCAA Regional play since 2000.
"I have never been prouder to be associated with a group of guys," Walter said. "This team has put New Orleans baseball back on the map, and it is our job as coaches to build on that in coming years."
