Dr. Richard Stillman, 1917-2008.Richard J. Stillman, University of New Orleans Professor Emeritus, died recently at the age of 91. He began teaching at UNO in 1967 and after his retirement in 1982 remained actively involved with the University, its faculty and students.

The University of New Orleans Center for Hazards Assessment, Response and Technology (UNO-CHART) will unveil a citywide, neighborhood-based electronic map of attractive elevated homes at a reception titled Imagining Safety in Art and Reality: Elevated Homes in New Orleans. The reception, to be held on Thursday, August 21 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., will also include a viewing of the art of Terrance Osborne, a local artist whose work celebrates home elevation.

Shirley Laska, professor of sociology and director of the UNO Center for Hazards Assessment, Response and Technology. Shirley Laska, professor of sociology and director of The University of New Orleans Center for Hazards Assessment, Response and Technology, has been recognized with the American Sociological Association's Public Understanding of Sociology Award for her work educating policy makers and the public since Hurricane Katrina. The award was presented on August 2 at the association's annual meeting on August 2 in Boston.
