L.C. Ulmer, in collaboration with the Ponderosa Stamp Foundation, will perform at the Ogden After Hours concert on Thursday, August 28, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. a the Ogden Museum of Southern Art/University of New Orleans.

The Rebuilding Information Station, a clearinghouse for rebuilding information located on the The University of New Orleans Lakefront Campus, will continue its free Hurricane Resistant Home Improvement seminars with a program titled "Foundations for Louisiana Homes" on Thursday, August 28 at 4:30 p.m. and again at 6:30 p.m.

The University of New Orleans will hold Get to Know UNO, a special informative open house for prospective students and their families, on Saturday, October 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The welcome program will be held in Milneburg Hall, Room 165, with additional informational booths and sessions in the Quad and throughout the Lakefront Campus.

Dr. Hughie Hughes, Associate Professor of Education at The University of New Orleans from 1966 to 1985, died August 12, 2008, at his home in Picayune, Mississippi. He was 85.

Dr. George C. Branam, Professor Emeritus and one of the original administrators of The University of New Orleans, died Thursday, August 21, 2008 at his home in Thousand Oaks, California. He was 85.

The New Orleans Quadroon: Myth and Reality will be the topic of a free presentation by Dr. Emily Clark, assistant professor of history at Tulane University, as the History Ya-Ya Series continues on Thursday, September 18, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Louisiana State Museum's Cabildo on Jackson Square.

The University of New Orleans will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2008-2009 beginning on September 5, the date marking a half-century since what was then LSUNO opened its doors with 63 faculty members to 1,460 freshmen.

The University of New Orleans and the Louisiana State Museum will host an international conference September 4-6 titled "The Cultures of Rebuilding In Post-Katrina New Orleans: An Interdisciplinary Conference."

The University of New Orleans Center for Hazards Assessment, Response and Technology (UNO-CHART) will unveil a citywide, neighborhood-based electronic map of attractive elevated homes at a reception titled Imagining Safety in Art and Reality: Elevated Homes in New Orleans. The reception, to be held on Thursday, August 21 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., will also include a viewing of the art of Terrance Osborne, a local artist whose work celebrates home elevation.

Shirley Laska, professor of sociology and director of The University of New Orleans Center for Hazards Assessment, Response and Technology, has been recognized with the American Sociological Association's Public Understanding of Sociology Award for her work educating policy makers and the public since Hurricane Katrina. The award was presented on August 2 at the association's annual meeting on August 2 in Boston.

The University of New Orleans Department of Film, Theatre and Communication Arts will open its 2008-09 theater season with "Cole: A Musical Revue of Cole Porter" September 25-27 and October 2-5 in the new Robert E. Nims Theatre.

Dr. Carl Weems, associate professor of psychology at The University of New Orleans, co-edited along with Dr. Stacy Overstreet of Tulane University a special section in the current issue of the Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology on research related to the effects of Hurricane Katrina on teh mental health needs of children.

The University of New Orleans, Lester E. Kabacoff School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Administration has been awarded a $10,000 grant from The Gallo Family to support and enhance its wine education program.

The Society of Wine Educators Honored Harsha Chacko, a professor in The University of New Orleans, Lester E. Kabacoff School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Administration, with the 2008 Wine Educator Award at its annual convention held recently in New Orleans.

University of New Orleans Research Professor of English Niyi Osundare has been named the 2008 Laureate of the Tchicaya U'Tamsi Award for African Poetry. The honor was presented on August 7 in Assilah, Morocco.
